CURRENT PRACTICE

Please see web site for recent work: http://www.mariabartolo.com

Site includes Handbag Art: a site specific, performative, intervention based practice in which the handbag becomes the site for art. I see my work as ‘small gestures,’ mini, temporal, curatorial events that may (or may not) redirect the gaze inciting new dialogues between past and present.

I am a freelance features writer for art and photography magazines Contemporary and Hot Shoe Int.

I have recently completed an MA in Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmiths College. I explored the relationship between the aural, visual and spatial dimensions within fine art, architecture, film and other areas of cultural production since 1945. This involved performative writing (writing as event)

I curate and present a series of radio programmes called The Subway Sect on Resonance FM. This project is in collaboration with art Monthly’s Eliza Williams and explores the relationship between contemporary art and music. Contributors include Jim Lambie, Hayley Newman, Peter Saville (Factory records), Dan Fox (Frieze), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine, Lost In Translation) and Andrew Innes (Primal Scream)
